Many large cities have "umbrella streets." The idea is a wonderful one, both for cool summer shade and cheerful color. In Istanbul, there are umbrella streets in Karaköy and several other places. We don't give much thought to umbrellas, other than being told to leave them outside on rainy days. This brings us to a story about two friends at a bus stop on a rainy day. One of them was fortunate to have a large umbrella. Although the umbrella kept both dry that day, the owner of the umbrella couldn't help but remind his friend every day afterwards about being kept dry by the umbrella that rainy day. Finally, the one friend had enough of this!

He took out a bottle of water and poured it over himself. He snapped, "Is this how wet I would have been without your umbrella that day? There... enough about your umbrella!" This little story might help us understand the idea of where to draw the line in a lawsuit. Here's another silly story to help illustrate further...

One day, a store manager on the way to work has an accident with a careless driver who runs a red light. Because of this careless driver, the manager's car is wrecked.

- He is late for work so he calls a ride company

- Unfortunately, the ride fare maxes his credit card

- This causes him to argue on the phone with his credit card company at work

- His boss, already annoyed that he was late, fires him for making phone calls

- Upset over being fired, the manager goes home and drinks a bottle of raki that night

- He becomes drunk and falls down the stairs in his apartment building, injuring his leg

The next day, our store manager sues the careless driver for damage to his car. He sues the driver for the cost of the ride. He also sues the driver for losing his job and injuring his leg. Which one of these lawsuits will succeed? Which ones will not succeed in court?

Only the first two lawsuits will succeed. They are foreseeable and one could reasonably connect them to the car accident. The other two lawsuits, for losing a job and falling down the stairs, would probably not be successful. They are not strongly tied to the act of running a red light.

These silly stories could help us understand an important legal concept - there comes a point in a case where you draw the line and say, "This is it. This is what the damages are... not the million other things you bring up." When attorneys plan a strategy for a lawsuit, they need to ask themselves similar questions - what is the CONNECTION between the injuries AND the wrongful acts that caused them.
