Over a hundred years ago, an Ottoman destroyer named Muavenet-i Milliye shaped history. Military actions at Canakkale brought the First World War to the doorstep of the Ottoman Empire. The amphibious landings in the Dardanelles were seen by Allied Forces as a way to end the war. Instead, what followed was a bitter military campaign for control of the Turkish Straits, the city of Istanbul, and the Eastern Front. In May 1915, the destroyer Muavenet-i Milliye carried out a bold and daring torpedo attack on the battleship HMS Goliath, shaping the direction of military actions in these now-tranquil waters.
Although the waters off Canakkale and the Gelibolu Peninsula are peaceful today, they were once the site of fierce battles. https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Painting-Night-Action-at-Canakkale/1570335/7607577/view
The painting is featured on the cover of "A SHIP THAT CHANGED HISTORY - Muavenet-i Milliye," a book for young readers about the sacrifices made by the sailors, soldiers, nurses, doctors, and others of both sides during World War One. https://www.amazon.com/Ship-That-Changed-History-Muavenet-i/dp/1095798103
