ÇOCUKLAR DÜYMASIN... VEYA DAHA DOĞRUSU, ÇOCUKLAR ÜZÜLMESİN

Many people enjoy the popular show "Çocuklar Duymasın." Two of the main characters are Haluk Bey and Meltem Hanım. As husband and wife, they provide a loving home for their children. Haluk, played by Tamer Karadağlı, can appear tough and angry on the outside. But he is softened by the gentleness and diplomatic skills of Meltem, played by Pınar Altuğ. Together, they are always there for the kids. But life isn't like that for all families out there. If parents go separate ways because of divorce, they often try their best to create a world where "çocuklar üzülmesin."

When a marriage breaks up, there are many issues to deal with. What will happen to the family home? How will the couple's assets be divided? Some of the biggest questions are, "Who will the children stay with, and who will make decisions for the children?" These last questions touch upon the subject of child custody.

Under JOINT custody, both parents become decision-makers. This is the most common choice and is preferred if the relationship between the parents is decent. If the relationship has deteriorated, SOLE custody might sometimes be applied. This means only one parent holds the power in making important decisions in the child's life. Part of the custody equation also involves determining physical custody, which is where the child will live.

There are other possible arrangements as well, such as alternating custody, split custody, or third-party custody. There is a great deal more to this important part of family law. How is custody decided? The short and simple answer is usually the "best interests of the child." But family law could apply different rules, depending upon the country, state, or province.

For divorcing parents who love their children, it really can be a matter of "çocuklar düymasın," where differences are put aside in the interest of trying to keep children happy and emotionally healthy.
