Some people are very creative. Their minds are always coming up with wonderful new ideas, new songs, new books, and more. The list of music artists from Zeki Müren to the present time could fill books. But not all creative people are artists. Some who are technically inclined invent wonderful machines, circuits, or other devices that make life better. And some creative people have a flare for advertising. They come up with the best names or logos for products, like on those ad banners that adorn (or some say clutter!) the streets of Istanbul. What do all these creative people have in common?

They all want to protect their creative works. We're talking about a body of law known as intellectual property. This covers creative works (copyrights), inventions (patents), and company names and logos (trademarks). Copyright deals with creative things such as literature, paintings, sculptures, and music. Patents deal with inventions. And trademarks deal with recognized brand names or logos. Just a note about copyrighting works of art... it isn't just poems, songs, or photographs. Protections can apply to three-dimensional works of art, such as the sculpture that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is looking at in the 1927 opening of the State Art and Sculpture Museum in Ankara. It appears in the article about his will. ATATÜRK'ÜN VASİYETNAMESİ https://www.communityabroad.com/turkish/post/1000000050310
What is the common denominator here? The musician, inventor, or ad creator does not want their work ripped off by others. They register their works with government offices. In the United States, this means the U.S. Copyright Office for literary, musical, and artistic works. Or it could mean the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for patents and trademarks.
What does this accomplish? It protects the intellectual property of the creative person. If others seek to use the literary works, musical works, company logos, or invention ideas without permission, the artist or inventor has stronger rights in an infringement lawsuit. This is a very basic overview. In future posts, I hope to outline more details about this important area of law.
